SPoT Gets a Makeover 2014-2015

Posted on Friday, January 30, 2015 by Chris

Yep, it's that time of year again when we rip up most of the Pro Course and rebuild it bigger and better just in time for Tampa Am. Team Pain Skateparks will be at the helm of engineering it once again and here's your demo / construction crew: Jay Hammond, Sterling Wright, Jason Ranft, and the good homie, Allen "Big Russ" Russell.
Big Russ's dog, Sarge is supervising everything to make sure it's up to par.
That's longtime SPoT homie, Aaron Burkett on the left, SPoT FSEC member, Jared Currey, and Josh Knight helping out with demolition. Thanks for putting in work fellas.
Aerial view of the west end.
Found this scrawled on one of the old banks next to the stairs after the Skatelite got ripped up.
Neckface X Lance Mountain collab.
The whole park is basically getting a makeover. Here's some new offices that are getting put in upstairs next to the other ones. These will be home to our live broadcast team when they are in town for Tampa Am / Pro and also a spot where riders can hang out between runs. I think Schaefer just really wanted an excuse to finally have a toilet near his office.
The view from inside the new offices.
Looking out into the Pro Course.
Some of this stuff will make it into the new course and some will get hauled off to the dump.
Last week was mostly demo and planning for the new Pro Course design. As you can see, the Kahuna is sticking around for another year.
Here's the west end of the Pro Course. It's hard to tell what's really getting updated at this point, but those two quarterpipes with the extension definitely aren't there anymore. Check out what Evan Smith got over this gap at Tampa Pro this year.
Another photo of the west end.
Here's a west end shot looking east towards the Kahuna. Looks like the pyramid is getting a makeover. I hope this thing sticks around for a while. There has been some insane shit going down over it lately.
All the pieces get taken apart, put out in the courtyard and assembled back together like a puzzle. Speaking of the courtyard, there's rumors of a concrete bowl in the works. Stay tuned for more...
Big Russ cutting some new skin.
Looks like this rainbow ledge is working its way back into the course somehow. Where do you think it should go? Jason Ranft and Jay Hammond probably have a pretty good idea.
These look like banks from the old center piece right in front of the judges stand. Maybe another A-Frame?
As an added bonus this year, we are also giving the Kiddie Course a makeover. Here's FSEC, Jared Currey starting demo on the mini.
There isn't much to skate at SPoT at the moment, but at least you can get in free until we're done with construction.
Here's an Insta shot by @dailybs of some new tranny finally starting to take shape. Schaefer approved. Check back next week and we'll have more photos of the Kiddie Course and completed Pro Course, plus maybe a few surprises.
Most of the Pro Course demo is already finished, so now it's on to what you want to see: Construction! This new center obstacle is looking fierce...I love the rainbow ledge addition.
The new hip extension looks sick, they even moved the seven-stair over and added a hubba. I can't wait to see what goes down in this section of the course.
Big Russ and Jason Ranft are making sure the new transitions next to the Kahuna are perfect.
Sterling making sure this obstacle is tight before laying down Skatelite.
Looks like they took out the small stairs and extended that Quarterpipe.
Stoked to see an A-Frame going back up.
Some silky new coping being cut.
Kiddie Course update: The mini ramp is gone, to be replaced by...???
Here's a pretty good idea of how the Kiddie Course demo is going so far...
Now we get to the good stuff... The Pro Course is basically finished! We're just putting the last touches on it today and then you can skate it for FREE tonight at 5pm.
...and that's it! Can't wait to see how this thing gets skated. See you guys tonight at 5pm and stay tuned for more updates on the Kiddie Course as we get them.
As work continues on the concrete course going down in the courtyard, things are starting to take shape. Here’s the middle of the courtyard on the West side near the bowl in the Kiddie course.
Gotta have the skeleton before the pouring can begin.
Here’s the corner that’ll lead to the gap over the bowl entrance door. This got tightened up just a bit now.
Gap over the door, if you’ve got it like that.
Here’s the opposite side of the door gap. To the right of the edge of this photo will be a Jersey gap.
...Or not. Deliberation continues and plans could change at any moment.
Here’s the build crew. We’re stoked to have Team Pain putting in the work to bring you a new concrete course in the courtyard. Stay tuned for more updates and see what we change up from this post. Who knows? We could end up bringing the vert ramp back instead.
Giancarlo and Alejandro are ready...are you?
It's official: our concrete courtyard is finished and ready to skate. The Team Pain dudes are just adding some last minute touches to it, but it got put to good use last weekend during our Valentine's Day Massacre contest. Look for some photos of that coming tomorrow. Here are some photos I got with my iPhone and Olloclip of the last part of construction. Come see it for yourself if you're in town.
