Zaturdays: Shred Butt Shocker Exposed!

Max Schaaf is cooler than you are, cooler than any of us are. He’s got that signature no nonsense SF attitude thing down to a science, and he can talk all he wants about how he’ll “try” to be cool around people like Julien Stranger or Jason Jessee, but that just reinforces the coolness. You don’t talk about trying to be cool unless you already are. The fact Max is blessed with one of the best styles to ever grace a halfpipe doesn’t hurt either. Max is a champion, a 90s legend, and now we learn he’s also responsible for one of the greatest Tampa Pro moments of all time.
Cool style, best tricks, that’s all Max. Photo by Gabe Morford.

The year was 2008, when the Pro weekend still had a vert contest in the lineup. The indoor vert ramp had been torn out in lieu of an outdoor Red Bull pipe. Max Schaaf came to enter, and it was cool to have him even show up. But for Max, who went through an entire career with none of the mainstream style corporate backers that a lot of the other 90s vert dudes are famous for, being seen skating a Red Bull ramp wasn’t an option. So he decided to do something about it, and we’re left with the legendary story of Shred Butt.
If you can find a photo of Max skating the Shred Butt pipe please send it over, but there’s a good chance he didn’t put his wheels on it due to Conscientious Objector status. Here’s one of the Gonz, almost as cool.

Here’s the video of Max’s confession during his recent BS with TG interview. The relevant part begins at (9:30) where Jim Thiebaud says “let’s call Brian Schaefer.” And yeah, Facetime with Schaefer makes it that much better.
