Dumb: The Story of Big Brother Magazine - Tampa Screening

Posted on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 by

In 2002 (2003?), I won a year subscription to Big Brother magazine as part of a fundraiser / raffle that SPoT was involved with, and I was stoked. I remember each issue showing up the mail every month, and laughing my ass off at the interviews, articles and photos all tied together with Dave Carnie and Chris Nieratko's writing. It was great.

If you're too young to remember Big Brother, take a look at Jenkem mag, King Shit, Fucking Awesome, Jackass... all these names would not be around without it. Started in 1992 by Steve Rocco (of World Industries fame) as a way to run his "too-offensive-for-other-mags" ads, BB was a lot like skateboarding back in those days: the Wild West. Anything goes.
There were just as many fans of Big Brother as there were haters, which made it that much better, since the core of skateboarding has always been about going against the grain. So when we found out here at SPoT that a documentary had recently been finished (and directed by none other than Patrick "Epicly Later'd" O'Dell), we wanted to find a way to screen it here.

The big premiere is in New York on April 27-30th, as part of the Tribeca Film Festival, so if you can make it there, that's the place to be. If you can't though, we'll be showing it here in Tampa at The Bricks on Saturday, June 3. As always, it will be a proper SPoT video screening and we'll probably have some surprises in store. This should be a really interesting doc, so come skate, have a drink and chill with us.
