Justin Bokma Wilding (Pencil & Crayon Study)

I first met Justin in the Fall of 1987. I was 16 he must of been 13 or 14. I think I met his brother Kevin first, down near Trinity Square. He was wearing a bunch of Skull Skates stuff and riding a Skull board and wheels. Kevin stood out for me at the time cause Skull was a west coast brand and I had just arrived in town from out west and he ripped. So, Kevin and I got to talking and we exchanged contact info at the end of a long night of skating. I imagine it was the next weekend when I was invited to the Bokma house to skate their ramp where I first encountered Justin. The day at the ramp was hilarious and Justin really stood out as a wisecracking smart ass kid who also happened to rip. I was fascinated by the whole Bokma family and Justin and I became fast friends. I was new to the Toronto skate scene at the time and definitely, in the beginning, had to run the gauntlet to be socially accepted and Justin was down for me right from the start and made me feel like a part of the crew and welcome. He made me and everyone around him laugh their heads off every time we hung out. I wasn’t in Toronto long at that time but it seemed like an epic never ending adventure and my time with Justin and the whole crew has stayed with me ever since. From the Trinity Square days, Toronto Skateworks, The Terrace, The Cow Ramp and Skate Zone, he really was a “Wizard” on a skateboard. In addition to that he had an incredibly sharp wit, a biting sarcastic tongue and was a bit of an old soul who was super aware and had a self-possession and confidence at that time that was well beyond his years. After I left Toronto I was psyched to see him rise up in the skate scene and make his way down to California. I was really proud of the little kid who I first met in that backyard in the Toronto’s east end all those years before. I’ll always remember Justin for his enthusiasm, his sense of humour his generosity and his thoughtfulness and I’m comforted by the memories of the times we shared and remember well the impact he had on my life - Alex Morrison.
