Admiration and respect for the quarry, the mark of a true outdoorsman. Dry ground lion hunting is often an under appreciated facet of hunting, in my humble opinion it's one of the last ways to truly experience that western way of life on a hunt. Riding miles upon miles on mule over terrain that cuts and bleeds, chasing and trailing with minimal sign of the animals passing. It takes a special breed of man to do this day in and day out. My hat goes off to @rimrockoutfitters for many years of dedication, we ain't all blood thirsty killers. Some of us love the pursuit and drive for knowledge so much it overrides that bloodlust and the animal will most of the time just get turned loose.
I shot this picture in Long Beach California as a surprise for my main squeeze @sabrina.rollo for many years she attended dance at this very building on the campus of CSULB. I thought she might get a kick out of seeing me utilize the location in a way that only skaters know how. It's the small things in life that make it all worthwhile, that and good friends and a loving family. Photo: @aacostaa
I found this spot about six or so years ago, while driving along I-70 East on the way to hunt mountain lion around Gypsum Colorado, with the Hoza brothers. This particular trip, we were trying to track an animal for the Hozas sisters husband. An older fellow aptly named 'Uncle'. It ended up being the most memorable trip I've ever been on, the lion run us ragged and the chase beat up the dogs pretty badly. Everything ended safely and successfully, but I never forgot that skate spot or the experience. Fast forward to 2015: it's below zero, icy, and the time to hit the spot had come. I'd been saving it for the @vansskate video, and the day before skating it I found out that the power plant in the background had actually been Uncles long time workplace up until his recent retirement, talk about energy at the spot. Years of hard work resonated off the canyon walls, and I knew in my heart that today was not the day I was going to die. The power of our hunt and the life's work of the Hoza family was at my back. I could have taken on the world. Photo: @aacostaa @theskateboardmag
