Eric Koston’s eS Game of SKATE Am Words and Photos by Rob MeronekEveryone in the Am Finals for this Game was flown in by eS from various other Games of SKATE they held around the country, including one here at SPoT. There were 16 ams total and one that was clearly ahead of everyone else there - some Japanese guy named Tetsuya Yasuta. I just call him firecracker foot. He did every trick like he was filming it and had the best style out there that day, which is kind of surprising from what I've seen of a lot of Japanese skaters. Us Asians have this term called FOB which stands for "Fresh Off the Boat," that you call someone who's new to the country and just doesn't kind of "get it" when it comes to the basics of life in the US. A lot of Asian skaters I've seen that didn't grow up in the US seem to have FOB skateboarding skills. Something's just not quite there in their style and tricks. Firecracker foot can't speak any English, so I guess he qualifies as an FOB, but his skateboarding is far from FOB for sure. Check out how nice his kickflips look. I was cheering for Tetsuya to make it to the Pro Game, but he got taken out by Jack Cook from Australia. Check out the tricks thrown down in that match up below. Jack got a spot in the Pro Game, but got taken out in the second round by Jimmy Carlin.
