FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
SKATEBOARDER Magazine’s Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater Los Angeles Benefit Skate Jam Helps a Wish Come True
San Clemente, CA (April 15, 2010) – SKATEBOARDER Magazine’s Inaugural Make-A-Wish Foundation Benefit Skate Jam presented by DC Shoes is this Saturday, April 17, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Skate Plaza in Los Angeles, California.
The founding principle behind the event was to unite the skate industry in support of a good cause. “We’ve always admired from afar what Damian at Southshore Distribution was doing with his annual Make-A-Wish® benefit skate jam out in Texas, which is now called the Johnny Romano Skate Jam,” said Jaime Owens, Editor, SKATEBOARDER Magazine. “We knew a lot of people were down for the event, but weren’t able to make it out, so we thought it would be a good idea to put on a Make-A-Wish event in Los Angeles to carry on the cause and be able to have tons of skaters show up that normally don’t make it out for the Texas one.”
In addition to furthering the cause, this event will also help the Make-A-Wish Foundation enhance the wish of a young man named Brian. Brian is an 18-year-old with aplastic anemia—a condition where his bone marrow does not produce sufficient new cells to replenish his blood cells.
His illness keeps him off his skateboard, but it hasn’t squelched his love of skateboarding. Brian’s wish is to make skate movies and the Make-A-Wish Foundation is giving him all the equipment he needs to do so. Brian will be at the Hollenbeck Skate Plaza on Saturday shooting footage for his first film. “This cause is very close to my heart,” adds Owens. “I’ve also had family members go through the Make-A-Wish program, and I’m really happy that with the help of Billy Deans, our Publisher, and Alex Yang over at DC shoes, we are able to make this happen. “
The event is open to the public and boasts the opportunity to come out and watch professional skateboarders like Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, Daewon Song and Nick Dompierre as they compete in a series of “Best Trick” contests hosted by SPoTlight Productions.
On site there will also be raffles, giveaways, music, autographs and street-fair style booths hosted by industry-leading skate brands including, but not limited to DC Shoes, Volcom, Analog, DVS, Nike SB and Adio, raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and giving back to the children of Los Angeles County. There will also be an after party at Royal Claytons English Pub beginning at 8:00 p.m. where everyone can gather for some grub after a long day at the Plaza.
