Zaturdays: Your Skating vs The Fabric of Time

Clause Grabke, the 1980’s German vert pro with the iconic Salvador Dali melting clock graphic, might have been onto something that only the world’s best skateboarders have so far managed to figure out. Was he trying to tell us? Call me crazy, but I’m convinced that taking skateboarding to that next level, where tricks are shown to be possible that were previously incomprehensible (Think Shane O’Neill, Nyjah, Luan), is less about training the body to go through the necessary motions (although that’s part of it), and more about teaching the mind to reach such an intense level of focus and concentration that it alters one’s relationship to the fabric of time itself. They say that time is relative, so there’s a chance that what we mortals are experiencing in a way that flies by too fast, feels to them, incredibly slowwwwwwwwww. Think about it, if you could stretch the time it takes to do a trick, how much easier would it be to perfectly execute whatever it is you’re trying? Imaging doing a slow motion tre flip, looking down at it calmly, waiting patiently for it to flip all the way around, biding your time until gently situating your feet back into position, then gracefully pushing the board back to the ground, with whatever style or flair you wanted to add to it. If there’s any truth to this, then the goal for the rest of us should be to figure out how to do it, how to slow down time. Maybe one of the greats can confirm it and give us some pointers. So, for now we wait…. although it might be a while since they’re used to doing things in slow motion.
