Coverage From the Cons Project Tampa 2019

Posted on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 by Chris

Last weekend, Converse brought Dolan Stearns, Ryan Townley, Andy Vasquez, Rob Collins and a handful of their team to town for a unique, DIY curb-building workshop. We learned the fundamentals of building a concrete skate block from start to finish, and the class even got to take home their own mini curbs. They also built a full sized, custom skate curb just for us, which of course we shredded. Check out some photos from the day and a short iPhone edit. HUGE thank you to Converse and the entire team for bringing this to Tampa - it was a blast.

Edwin brought his kids to enjoy the class.
Joe was here to assist Andy with anything he might need, including filling each container with an equal amount of cement.
Always a pleasure to get Rob Collins in town. Miss you already buddy!
Jai Tanju was here shooting photos with the Converse crew. If I had noticed his Hamburger Eyes hat earlier I would’ve tried to buy it right off his head. Great meeting you Jai!
Rob seen doing his best Jai impression…
Brian isn’t big on working solo, so he enlisted the help of an expert.
The first step is to coat the molds in something to help release the dried Concrete. The kids were stoked to work on a hands on project like this.

Time to pour our cement into the water. And remember, two heads are better than one.
Then the cement & water mix needs to be stirred up nicely, until all the water is absorbed and it resembles something like a Frosty.
Once the concrete is properly mixed, its time to pour it into the rubber mold.
With the mold full, the next move is to remove excess material with a trowel.
After about 20 minutes, the concrete should be cured enough to remove from the mold, as displayed by Andy here.
And this is the finished Mini Curb!
Now we are going to make a full size curb, and give the students a chance to put their hands on the project.
Arianna was especially hyped on the concrete mixer.
The next step is to compact the concrete by vibrating it from underneath with a hammer drill. This causes all of the bubbles to rise to the top, creating stronger concrete.
A piece of rebar is placed in the middle of the concrete to make the finished product even stronger. Then more crete goes on top!
Once the mold is full, the kids smoothed out the edges with a trowel.
Dolan added a little extra detail…
There she is! The full size curb we are about to shred!
Cons provided FREE PIZZA & BEER for everyone at the park and even helped us offer FREE Skating after 2pm. Thanks for hooking it up big time Cons!
Steve Spence was also very thankful…
Ryan Townley is Rich’s biggest fan.
What happens when 3 photographers are in the same place at the same time? We take photos of each other of course!
The curb is out, and so is the cash! Time for a Tricks for Cash session!

We let this little kid announce the Tricks for Cash event. He killed it.
Honored to have such an amazing crew to put this event together! Thank you to everyone at Cons including Andy Vasquez, Rob Collins, Joe Marchese, Tanner, Q, Jai Tanju, Russ Pope, Dolan Stearns, Ryan Townley and everyone else who joined us for this amazing workshop.
After the event, Cons was kind enough to take our crew out to dinner. Huge thank you again to everyone for making this weekend one for the books…(Not pictured, the entire Cons & SPoT squad taking over the dance floor at Castle)
