"Is this you?" asked @killtrain_ when he texted me this pic earlier today. "How the hell did you get this?" I replied. I have no idea how this pic made it into the hands of the @teampainskateparks crew that is building our new public skatepark in Tampa, but it's being used as a reference on some of the obstacles they're recreating. Yep, it's me. I was 15-ish. 1988 maybe? Let's hope they don't actually make the new skatepark too much like the old Bro Bowl. I respect my history, but I want something new.
My career/passion has afforded me the luxury of not only getting to meet the legendary pro skateboarders I grew up looking at in the mags, but actually becoming friends with them. The grey shirt and zine were sent to me by @mikevallely. The books are from #TheGonz. The white one is about his zines, and the other he personally gave me to read...and I read it. The black shirt was handed to me by @pduffplanb, and he said, "Don't tell @welshington." Okay, I'll pick up all of the names that I've dropped...and I won't ever take this awesome skateboarding life for granted.
This QP on the #dreamdriveway is all the way at the bottom. It stays pretty soggy down there, so it's really starting to decay. I decided to work on it today and am left with one of three choices: 1. Keep it like this and relayer, which will be a substandard repair. 2. Spend a couple more hours ripping off rotten wood. 3. Tear the damn thing down and build another concrete obstacle. No matter what I choose, I can't go wrong...
I think today's highlight for me during @southbound_and_down at @theboardr HQ was the Slow Races. I'm all about turning everything into a competition, and going as slow as possible head-to-head on motorcycles was pretty damn entertaining. Thanks to everyone that came out to hang with us to enjoy some bikes, beers, boards, bands, and burnouts.
It was pretty quiet today at @theboardr HQ. @hidefjoe and I were the only two guys in the office early this afternoon. I got off a long conference call and heard, "Hello. Is anyone here?" That's always the worst...when someone you don't want to see randomly strolls into the office. But I really wanted to see this particular person. We have a long history and I'm really proud of him and where he's ended up. Thanks for swinging by @dannyrenaud. This is a #tbt only because I met you over 15 years ago. Stoked to still know you today...
Life can be hectic sometimes, and even when I'm home in Tampa, the days just fly by. So I made it a point to skate tonight. I was out on the #dreamdriveway by myself and some random dude skated by my house on the street out front and waved. I thought that was weird because I've lived here for nearly five years and thought I knew of the few skaters in my neighborhood. I invited him down to ride and met a new friend. Good times tonight @c.r.schreiber. Thanks for making it all possible @jenna__clements
Good morning from the Santa Monica Courthouse, where the #BoardrBoys are setting up for #WheelieDope, brought to you by @joeybrezinski and @andalebearings. The Contest starts at 12pm. Come on down and hang with us here, and then make it over to @berrics this evening for #adidasskatecopa. All info at TheBoardrEvents.com.
Boring photo. Interesting story: So this guy in the middle of the pic had the absolute loudest megaphone I've ever heard. I'm on the 4th floor at The Standard in Downtown LA and I could hear every word he was saying totally clearly...so clear that I went down to witness on street level. He is a workers' rights activist and is claiming that this restaurant is breaking labor laws. That's all fine with me, but the lame part was that he was berating any patron that dare open the door of @publicschool213, screaming, "SHAME ON YOU!" Damn man, I just wanted to go in there and simply have a beer. I support free speech for all Americans, but this seemed like a pretty whack approach.
Heading up to Montreal on an early-morning flight from Tampa to hang at #AmGettingPaid for the weekend. It's open to the public and free to watch. All info is at TheBoardrEvents.com. If you want to enter, email me at Ryan@TheBoardr.com. Oh yeah, not only is there $10,000 for 1st place, but also a most-expenses-paid trip to #TheBoardrAm Finals in Austin at @xgames next June!
Pushing your personal limits and filming a full, legit video part, regardless of your ability, has got to be one of the most difficult things to do in skateboarding. Add in being over 40...and very few can pull that off. Hats off to my good friend, associate, and vegan/XXX inspiration @vernlaird for making us old dudes proud...again. You can check out the full part at jenkemmag.com.
I landed in Barcelona this morning, got settled in my hotel, and then headed out to explore. I skated around and saw so much cool architecture and culture in this amazing city, and finally made my way over to MACBA, where there were several hundred people hanging out, skating, drinking, smoking, and just enjoying the end of summer in Spain. I'm here for #adidasskatecopa, and there couldn't be a better destination...
This Bible is well over 100 years old. It belonged to my grandparents on my mom's side, the Emeneos. I've been going through a lot of my stuff recently, and this one is a keeper...along with that kid in my other arm. Someday I'll pass it on to her. It's been great to be at home for the past 12 days and enjoy just being around Tampa, going to @theboardr HQ, and skating the #dreamdriveway...
