Everything's a Dollar at Skatepark of Tampa!!
Posted by Rob, Monday, April 01, 2013 6:45 AM
It's about time skateboarding had a dollar store.
On this new episode of A Case of the Mondays, AlBow aka MP3J breaks it down for you on how everything's a dollar. Skateboards, $1! Beats by Dre, $1! Reynolds' new shoe, $1! Everything, $1! UPDATE: April Fools! Thanks for another year of some nice laughs. The 20% coupon code is still good through midnight tonight, though.
Owning and Running a Skatepark is Not For Everyone

After 24 hours of owning most of Skatepark of Tampa, Weezy sold his shares back to us. Damn! What a crazy April Fools Day. It's all over now.
Thanks to SkateDaily.net for being in on our story with us and helping spread the joy. I made that up in a hurry last week and when Jorge put the one on the site for me last night, it didn't include the part about them reporting it. I have spent the last few days disconnected from tekmology on a much needed rest break after Tampa Pro. Anyway, oops, thanks ya'll. Here's a big Skate Daily ad at the bottom of this post.
On a side note, if you saw that and got angry instead of a laugh, maybe skateboarding isn't for you. Move on, try the old stick and ball with your roid rage. We need to keep things in skateboarding as unserious as possible. You should be laughing not just when you're hating, but especially when you're hating. Hating is fun, but don't you think it's better when it's done with comedic value? I need to remind myself of that sometimes, too.

$9.3 Million To Infinity

Well, this is a weird one, but based on all the internet chat, not something completely unexpected really. First of all, let me say that SPoT is not changing no matter what. We are still who we are and no one tells us what to do. But, Weezy now owns a 51% stake in SPoT. This press release will be out there later today, but I wanted us to be the first place you heard it. Okay, all seriousness aside, WEEZY OWNS THE PARK WOOOOO YEAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! OH HELLZZZ YEAH, SON!!! Read on: Lil Wayne Buys Majority Ownership in Skatepark of Tampa for $9.3 Million.

When people checked in for Tampa Pro, I told them this document they were signing was a waiver. It's not my fault if they didn't read it, although it sucks that Sheckler and Dylan Rieder actually did. Everyone else, we own you. That was no waiver. It was a contract. See this SPoTlight Productions press release: Top Pros Sign Exclusive Tampa Pro Contract.
Huge News Today!

From the press release:
In addition to announcing the best team of all time, the riders' contracts state that they are forbidden to skate with anyone that is not wearing SPoT Footwear, whether it be at contests, demos, or just the local spot around town.
Like all shoe companies, we have nothing but
the most original and creative designs for our new venture: SPoT Footwear.
Look out for this campaign from that one company that wants 1997 back:
The Bankruptcy Fallout

In a crisis, the least loyal are always the first to bail. Check out this etnies press release: Don Brown Quits Skatepark of Tampa Party Team Following Bankruptcy. At least he's picking up our debt to Stussy. Thanks, Don! See Don hard at work on the classic etnies Rap shoe. He's not always on the sauce and at the bar.
Maybe We Invested Too Much In The U

Everything's easier seen in hindsight. Maybe we should have put ads on the site to take advantage of all this traffic? Maybe we should not have had so many free days? Maybe we should not have changed the course so much. Maybe we should have not kept our admission prices the same since 1993 when we opened despite changing the course every single year since then? Active couldn't make it through the Great Recession and neither could that one skate park a few miles from us on State Road 688. With all those horrible business decisions, what makes you think we would survive? Skatepark of Tampa has filed for bankruptcy.

UPDATE: Duh, April Fools.
Well at least the new owners are going to serve alcohol in the Snack Bar now. The price increases, well, we haven't increased our prices since we opened so you can't complain too much about that. We can't say what big ass company just bought out SPoT, but the press release has enough details for you to figure it out yourself: SKATEPARK OF TAMPA SELLS OUT AND GOES CORPORATE.
